In 2002, Royal Canin built a state-of-the-art factory in Johannesburg to locally produce an optimally nutritious range of products, including Vets Choice. While the plant was purpose-built to be ergonomic and highly efficient, it was also designed to respect the environment.
The plant has been designed to be environmentally responsible and was awarded the internationally recognized ISO 4001 certification for environmental protection. The optimal and responsible use of resources guides the plant’s operations. For example, the use of gravity-fed production conserves electricity without compromising efficiency and quality.
The eco-friendly facility acts as a sanctuary to countless species of birds, insects and even some small animals including the endangered African Bullfrog, and is a testament to Royal Canin’s philosophy to be committed to the total well-being of animals.
Excellence in Safety and ManufacturingRoyal Canin South Africa buys raw materials exclusively from audited and approved suppliers, who are required to provide a proven quality analysis after extensive laboratory testing. Strict control, before the offloading of raw materials is done using an infrared scanning system which is able to identify the “fingerprint” of a selected raw material, confirming its compliance with our specifications. These preventative safety measures are in addition to Royal Canin’s standard testing procedures which analyse odour, colour, moisture, protein levels, starch content, identified risk mycotoxins, foreign bodies, cellulose, xanthophyl (natural pigment) and ash, depending on the raw material analysed. The manufacturing process is technologically advanced and quality is controlled every step of the way to ensure the production of a nutritionally robust product. Royal Canin’s production facility is a demonstration of how the company is committed to the well-being of dogs and cats in everything that it does. Our GardensRoyal Canin Eco Industrial Park is a rehabilitated, self-sustaining ecological landscape, harmoniously integrated with its Industrial Node. The Park’s natural environment is an authentic African Highveld, known as the Central Bakenveld veld type. In autumn 2003, all three of the Park’s naturally occurring local topographical features and their associated plant communities were re-established. This included Grassland with Natural Woodland, Woody Boulder Outcrops and Rocky Slopes, and the Drainage Line. |

This ecologically integrated Park is managed by an Environmental Management Plan, to ensure adherence to sustainable natural resource principles. These include recycling, and reusing water, a non-chemical approach for weed control, and use of fire as a tool for grassland biodiversity management, maintaining all natural features and processes critical to healthy functioning eco-systems.
Essentially the Park is managed as a nature reserve, ensuring local biodiversity development. A natural ecological process of succession will enable an increase in specie diversity by means of hardy plants creating suitable growing conditions for more sensitive species. The Park’s outdoors can be enjoyed by strolling through the broad path-like lawns, relaxing at a rest spot, or experiencing the eco-interactive trail.
Royal Canin’s Eco Industrial Park model is a world class example of an ecologically sensitive industrial development, mitigating the negative impacts of urban sprawl. Sustainable development is a critical issue in assuring a healthy planet, and man and animal’s survival.
