IT SEEMS SQUIRRELS ARE INTO KITTEN FOOD

Cape Town - Janine Oxford, Sales Assistant at Longbeach Vetshop, was not worried when 3 squirrels arrived on 29 October 2012. She had reared squirrels twice before and knew just how to feed and care for them. Janine reached for Royal Canin Babycat Milk with confidence that the diet would be perfect for them.

Using an insulin syringe, Janine fed the squirrels 2ml of Royal Canin Babycat Milk per feed every 4 to 6 hours. A month later they were on 6ml to 8ml. She then began introducing dried bananas, rooibos biscuits and hamster food after a month, between their milk feeds, and they enjoyed these treats too.

“This is the third time I have hand-reared squirrels and it is such an amazing experience,” says Oxford, “ This time, I was able to share it with my 5 year old son who took great delight in being around them. The squirrels were found in the Tokai Forest and taken to False Bay Veterinary Clinic. The practice knew that I had looked after squirrels previously and called to ask if I could feed and raise them.”

Royal Canin Marketing Manager, Tarryn Day, says, “As a pet health nutrition company, we are always thrilled to see the versatility of our products. The nutrients in the kitten formula diet are specifically formulated for growing kittens and it is pleasing to see that other animals can benefit from Babycat Milk. This, of course, should only be fed under the strict supervision of veterinarians.”

Royal Canin Babycat Milk is ideal for kittens separated form mothers where the intake of milk substitute is essential. The main nutritional benefits from Royal Canin Babycat Milk include:

- Contributing to the optimal development of vital functions (nervous system, vision, heart)

- Ensuring optimal digestive tolerance

- Encouraging rapid and regular weight gain.

“It is clear that the squirrels were able to benefit from Babycat Milk in the early stages of their growth,” says Day. “These tiny animals have similar nutritional needs to other small animals, like kittens. Babycat Milk is enriched with DHA, which is naturally present in cat milk and vital during the lactation phase, a crucial phase in the development of the kitten’s brain.

“We are all so pleased with the development of the squirrels and are extremely proud of the great work done by Janine Oxford. We need to reiterate, when an animal is found, like in the case of the squirrels, it is always best to consult a veterinarian on their treatment and nutritional needs, as was the case with these squirrels sent to Janine for feeding. Do not attempt to adopt or feed any wild animal without their proper advice and guidance.”
