On Sunday 1 September 2013, Dainfern Valley held its very first Royal Canin Dainfern Valley Spring Dog Walk. On a chilly Highveld morning 71 dogs dragged their owners out of bed and into the neighbourhood to tackle either a 1, 5km or 4km route. The suburb came to life with the happy sounds of dogs taking their leisurely Sunday morning walks.

Royal Canin marketing manager, Tarryn Day, says that even in smaller residential areas like Dainfern Valley, the turnout of dogs shows the growing pet culture of South Africans. “We continue to be impressed by the growing numbers of responsible pet owners in the country,” She says. “We have certainly seen an increase in the health of dogs over the past 5 years and dog walks encourage a healthier lifestyle for both pet and owner.”

Royal Canin provided water points for the dogs on the 1,5km and 4km courses with veterinarians and vet nurses on stand-by in case the dogs needed any medical assistance. Each dog received a doggie pack that included a food tin, doggie bandana and a voucher to use on their next purchase of Royal Canin health nutrition. The first 3 dogs to saunter over the finish line each received a special gift hamper from Royal Canin.

The entry fee for the dog walk was also somewhat different. Each entry had to be paid with a dog food donation that was handed to the Randburg SPCA. “We are always happy to support animal welfare organisations and the SPCA is so close to the hearts of everyone at Royal Canin,” continues Day. “Dog walks offer the ideal opportunity to be a part of an initiative that gives back to charity while at the same time encouraging healthy lifestyles. We were also able to engage with consumers to discuss the benefits of responsible pet ownership and the immense value of feeding a precise and targeted diet that can help in preventing certain health conditions or assisting in the management of certain health problems.”
