SPCA ROYAL CANIN MUTT AND MEOW OF THE YEAR

Every year dog and cat owners in the Western Cape eagerly anticipate the SPCA Cape of Good Hope Royal Canin Mutt and meow of the Year competition. Pictures and stories flood the entry box and judges, often moved to tears, have the unenviable task of choosing the winners. Sponsors of the competition, Royal Canin, manufacturers of precise health nutrition for dogs and cats, provide the winners with six months’ worth of food.

Royal Canin Marketing and Area Breeder Sales Manager, Louise McQueen, says, “Judging this year proved to be one of the most difficult I have ever had to do. Each entry was indeed very special and the motivations touched our hearts. The incredible commitment shown by pet owners is just so typical of South Africans’ resolve. The spirit of the owners and their willingness to stop at nothing to ensure the absolute health and quality of care for their pets continues to astound us at Royal Canin.”

Mutt of the Year 2013 went to Sabi, owned by Rene May. Sabi was rescued by Rene in October last year while on her way back from dropping her daughter off at a birthday party in Wellington, Western Cape. She happened to notice a tiny creature trying to climb up onto the pavement.

Realising it was a puppy and with her heart in her throat she picked up little Sabi, obviously suffering from tremendous hardship. She was burnt, starving, dehydrated, riddled with fleas and lice and simply in a shocking state.

Rene began the long process of nursing her back to health. Sabi got her name that day. After giving her a bath, Rene and her family went to a restaurant and took their new little baby with them. They ordered sushi, and as they were eating she awoke and before anyone could stop her, she bit into a little clump of wasabi. And there you go. She got her name.

Meow of the Year 2013 went to Smokey, owned by Marlene Kloka. Smokey was adopted on 10 April 2010 and Marlene considers this as one of the best days in her life. Smokey was
a tiny feral cat that was rescued by Marlene’s husband and she barely weighed 100 grams. Marlene hand fed her but immediately saw that something was wrong with her eyes.

The veterinarian informed Marlene of the diagnosis. Smokey had no eyelids. On top of this she had feline AIDS.

Panorama Veterinary Hospital referred the case to the Cape Animal Hospital. Marlene and Smokey refused to give up and after lengthy procedures including blepharoplasty, but
sadly one eye could not be saved, and electrolysis, pet and pet owner came through the tough ordeal. It is now 3 years later and Smokey is literally, a walking miracle.

McQueen concludes, “This year’s winners are very special, made even more so by their heartbreaks turned into happiness. It is incredible to see the way responsible pet owners open up their hearts and homes to help animals that are lost or in distress. We are exceptionally proud to be involved with SPCA Cape of Good Hope and look forward to this event every year.”
