ROYAL CANIN DOG DAY HAS TAILS WAGGING AT ANIMAL WELFARE

A cool morninggreeted nearly 1000 dogs and their owners at Avianto Clubhouse in Muldersdrift on Sunday 5 May 2013 as they excitedly arrived for the annual Royal Canin Dog Day, a fun walk through a picturesque countryside veld just west of Johannesburg. The event, hosted by dog and cat health nutrition manufacturers and distributors, Royal Canin, is all about the dogs and creates awareness of animal welfare organisations’ plights to rescue, heal and rehome dogs.

Typical Highveld Autumn weather warmed the day to more than pleasant temperatures drawing out the sunscreen from many backpacks and handbags. This year, dogs and owners had a choice of 3 distances, depending on owner and dog’s aspirations. A rather tough 7km walk saw walkers eagerly racing off, or rather owners being pulled by their dogs, at the early 9am start followed by a 4km and 1 km mini walk. Royal Canin staff manned 3 water points along the routes and waited in anticipation for the first walkers.

Dogs and owners converged on the rest points with owners grabbing for refreshments while dogs took the opportunity to veer off course and dive into the many pools of cool water provided by Royal Canin before hopping out for a refreshing drink at the dog bowls standing ready for lapping tongues. All dogs, and owners, crossing the finishing line, received a goody bag from Royal Canin.

Royal Canin Area Sales Manager for Johannesburg, Sonja Pienaar, was delighted at the turnout. “We are always thrilled to see so many pet owners taking the time out to enjoy a stroll at Dog Day,” she says. “Every year we are more surprised at the passion owners have for their pets.  And as more and more dog owners register, animal welfare organisations benefit as food donations increase. This makes the day so worthwhile. Not only do we create further awareness for the charities, they benefit from the much needed food donation.

Dog owners are encouraged to bring tins or bags of dog food to donate to participating animal welfare organisations. Royal Canin, of course, brings their own donation for the charities. This year animal welfare organisations benefitting from the walk include:

- Husky Rescue

- Spaniel Rescue

- Greyhound Rescue

- Kitty & Puppy Haven

- Ark Animal Centre

- Collie Rescue

- SAVA CVC

- Happy Yappers

- Irwin Animal Rescue

- Therapy Dogs

- Pekingese Rescue

- Pug Rescue

- Barking Mad

- CLAW

Tarryn Day, Marketing Manager for Royal Canin says, “Pet owners in South Africa continue to amaze us and it fills us with pride when we see the excellent health of their pets. It is great to see that all owners at Dog Day share Royal Canin’s philosophy of responsible pet ownership and, importantly, our uncompromising commitment to the animal. Dog Day is definitely an event where the pet comes first. The day, of course, is all about the dogs.”

Various events kept everyone enthralled. Dog agility, training exhibitions and fun was the order of the day after the walk. Everyone was able to grab refreshments, find a spot around the arena and applaud man’s best friend. Owners, children, friends and family all walked away with some tired feet, but most of all, happy smiles.
