Judging

Feline show, a key moment

A feline show is a key moment in the breeding and selection of pedigree cats, since it’s up to the judges to choose, present, and reward the best cats in each category and therefore their breeders. For the public, this is a unique opportunity to admire the diversity of feline breeds. The oldest show was that of the Crystal Palace in London in 1871.

Conventional or traditional judging: LOOF, FIFe, WCF, GCCF.

Each cat is presented individually by his owner to the judge who is going to examine him and draw up a report on his strong and weak points on a form prepared by the organizing club, on which the breed, colour, gender, age and entry class are mentioned.

Upon completion of this report, a qualitative judgment and a title are awarded to the cat if he has shown enough merit. If several cats are entered in the same category, they are ranked in relation to each other, the winning title being awarded to the first, again if he is considered as the most deserving one with respect to the standard. The exhibitor will leave with a judgment card.

American-style judging: CFA, TICA...

To be judged, the cats are brought onto a “ring,” a half-circle of cages, where they will be presented individually to a judge.He/she will rank them from the first to the last by colour, groups of colours or divisions and by breed, according to their entry class. At the end of this judging session which is to be held in public and orally, the judge will callback his/her ten best cats, irrespective of breed, and rank them again from the tenth to the first during an often spectacular final.

The cats are judged by several judges, each responsible for his/her own final. This judging system enables to bring out definitely the best cats; all the more so as, at the end of the show, the average of the rankings obtained will be worked out. There is no judgment card. An annual ranking per “region” enables to know the rank of every cat according to his category (adult, neutered, kitten) and his breed.
